Young had a knack at Alabama for sliding in the pocket to create passing lanes, a skill set he showed off throughout OTAs. “So to be quite honest, I expected a whole lot more balls batted down from all the quarterbacks.” So the defensive line, they rush and then they pull off and they’re standing there - more guys standing with their hands up,” Reich said. “Because we’re not going live and we’re telling them not to hit the quarterback. In fact, Reich thought there would have been more. The 5-foot-10 quarterback matched that total during the two-day minicamp, with one each day. Prior to the draft, Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said Young only had two passes knocked down during his last year at Alabama. ![]() The batted balls are worth keeping an eye on. And them welcoming me, who’s never played a snap before, who’s trying to prove himself and trying to do everything he can to help the team (was important).”Ģ. “There’s a lot of guys here that have had a lot of success and played a lot of snaps of NFL football. “Being embraced by the locker room, that means a lot to me,” Young said. But listening to Young talk and the way his teammates talk about him, it’s not an act. Young seemed to go out of his way to soak up any morsel of advice a veteran had for him, be it a teammate on offense ( Andy Dalton) or defense ( Shaq Thompson), to name a couple. He knows he’s got it, but he’s humble with it.” “He walks around with this kind of humble - excuse my language - he’s like humble but I-know-I’m-the-s–t type of swag. ![]() He put quite a stamp on the locker room,” Brian Burns said. Players noticed, including the Panthers’ only Pro Bowler and one of their strongest voices. And while Young is plenty confident, he carries himself like a fourth-round pick from Central Michigan just hoping to make the roster. He won a Heisman Trophy at Alabama as the star quarterback for college football’s most storied (and hated) program. It didn’t take long for Young to win the respect of his older teammates. So looking forward to that.”Īs the NFL goes into hibernation, The Athletic looks at five takeaways from the Panthers’ OTAs and minicamp (*Reich’s no-pads caveat noted).īryce Young to Hayden Hurst up close and personal. Reich reluctantly identified a couple of other young guys on offense who impressed him during OTAs and minicamp (more on them in a bit).īut then Reich added the caveat he also mentioned a couple of weeks ago after an OTA session: The spring work serves merely as a fried-food appetizer before the steak-and-salad entrée of Spartanburg. They now know more about what makes Bryce Young tick and which players seem to be good fits for the 3-4 defense. Is a natural leader, a winner and the guy you want leading your team on a last-minute drive. The Panthers learned a lot about each other over the past couple of months. Has an extremely high football IQ and will have no problem picking up a complex college playbook. Has an advanced feel in the pocket and is excellent going through progressions and finding his secondary targets. Has improved his touch and accuracy on the deep ball, but it’s an area we think he can continue to get better. Never looks flustered or nervous in the pocket. Plays with a poise and savvy beyond his years. Almost looks more comfortable when the play breaks down and he can improvise and make a play with his instincts. Will scramble to make a play with his arm more than taking off and running, although he does have the ability to run for plus yards. His ability to escape pressure and extend plays is as good as you’ll see at the high school level. Has a live arm and is able to throw just as well outside the pocket as he does from inside. Holds the ball low, which can make his release elongated, but he gets the ball out extremely quick to compensate. ![]() Has a slight frame and needs to bulk up and add some size and strength.
